One of the most iconic spots in Lincolnton, the historic courthouse located at the center of the city square, is getting some renovation work done to its exterior. Built in 1921 the building is over 100 years old. Facilities Management Director John Henry brought a bid for the renovations before the board of commissioners on April 21st. The renovations are to include, but not limited to, new windows and doors, cleaning and sealing of exterior, waterline and sewer upgrades, new seating areas/food vendor areas, and upgrading electrical equipment.
The cosmetic upgrades being done are to bring back the historicity of the building. The bid provided to the board by Mr. Henry was through JM Cope Construction. The bid for “site work and shell alterations” provided a guaranteed maximum price of $3,773,876.00. Commissioner Cesena made a motion to accept the bid. All Commissioners voted in favor. The project has a substantial completion date of January 2026.
These efforts are to continue the ongoing project purpose as stated on the Lincoln County website. “To ensure that the building continues serving all the citizens of Lincoln County by repurposing for the highest and best use at minimal cost to taxpayers. Allow the building to contribute to the local economy and to the City of Lincolnton’s downtown central business district. Solidify the building as a highly valued cultural resource by acknowledging the building’s historical significance, protecting the structure against demolition, and maintaining the architectural integrity of the exterior including memorials and monuments.”
