City Councilman Kevin Demeny made an unexpected request last week at the city council meeting. When Mayor Ed Hately asked if any councilman had an addition to the agenda, Councilman Demeny spoke up mentioning he had been inspired by a speaker at the May city council meeting. Demeny stated that Mr. Alan “Gunny” Hoyle, who regularly attends government meetings to speak, made a good point in that being a parent is one of the hardest jobs; however, the city does nothing to celebrate Mother’s Day or Father’s Day! Demeny sought to add both special days to the city’s calendar as well as Memorial Day as all deserve to be celebrated.
In a conversation with Councilman Demeny, he said, “I feel the most difficult job there is, especially today, is that of raising children. We want to make it a permanent part of what we do as the City of Lincolnton to lift up and support the job of parenting in our community…Going forward we will honor Mother’s Day and Father’s Day as part of our City Council meetings in those appropriate months.” When Councilman Demeny referenced Memorial Day, he labeled it as “serious” and “somber,” and credited those that sacrificed their life for America as upholders of freedom that deserve to be remembered.
City Manager Ritchie Haynes chimed into the discussion and recommended that Demeny add Veterans Day to the calendar as well. Demeny agreed to the idea and said he was “glad to add Veterans Day,” and therefore included it in his motion. The council voted and agreed unanimously to add Veteran’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Memorial Day to the city calendar.
