Currently, there is around 21.5 acres of land that has been sitting vacant behind the old Carolina Mill building. It is zoned for commercial use. Danny B Dellinger Jr. has requested a rezoning hearing for the property. The current Lincolnton land use plan states a priority on preserving and revitalizing industrial areas. Even though it does not align with current city plans, the planning board voted 5-1 in favor of the rezoning from commercial land use to residential. The board's recommendation to the counsel came with a stipulation that the land could not be subdivided and would only be permitted to be used for single family homes. If the land were to be sold, it would have to go under rezoning again to change said use. Planning Director Jean Derby presented to the counsel a statement of approval and denial. Counsel member Demeny made a motion to approve, and all council members voted to approve. While there was one concerned citizen who made public comment, their concerns were quelled when informed the land could not be used for a subdivision.
